Earlier this month, the PGA Tour announced sweeping changes are coming in 2028 as the golf league adopts a new two-series system with relegation for those who struggle.
Among the major changes is an overhaul to the sponsor exemptions that have been in place since 2022. Starting with the 2028 season those will be a thing of the past as the PGA Tour moves forward with its new way of life.
Among those who could be impacted is Jordan Spieth, who has received a number of sponsor exemptions of the past few seasons. Earlier this week he opened up on the new changes coming to the PGA Tour and he doesn’t believe much is going to change.
“I don’t know, I guess we’ll find out. It doesn’t seem like it’s like totally different than what’s going on right now. I think it’s being proposed as like a huge change, to me it feels like it’s just a modified version of what’s already happening,” he said initially.
“I don’t know about locations or tournaments here and there, so I don’t really have a whole lot more to say about it. But it’s one of those things where I’m sure once it gets started and solves whatever problems are trying to be solved and will be adjusted after you get into it a few years and see how it’s going,” he added.
The decision to offer a sponsor exemption to Spieth or players like Rickie Fowler or Adam Scott has received flak from fans and fellow golfers. But that’s all going to change.
